Home Greenhouses 101

January 19th, 2010

Home greenhouses are aluminum structures, glazed with glass or polycarbonate panels, which allows natural light to nourish plants year round. The controlled environment provided by home greenhouses extends the gardening season indefinently regardless of the weather or other competing external factors. Listed below are five main areas to consider when selecting and installing home greenhouses.

Location
The ideal location a greenhouse is it that which provides the most natural light throughout the day, however, available space can be limited.  Where space is not limited freestanding home greenhouses will collect the most light throughout the day.  For the homeowner with limited space for constructing a greenhouse, a lean to structure can provide ample gardening space while tucking up against a house or garage.  Whether a freestanding or lean to home greenhouse is selected, your plants will always thrive where the most light is available throughout the day and year.

Foundation
The most common forms of foundation used with home greenhouses are slabs and footings.  It is strongly recommended that the foundation extend below the frost line to mitigate cracking and heaving. For the most up-to-date and area specific information contact your local building department or architect.

Climate Control
Determine what type of plants will be grown in the greenhouse before any equipment purchases are made. Successful and productive home greenhouses consider the different needs of each plant which will be housed. For example, different plants will require different temperature ranges, ventilation regulation and light exposure.

Personalization
Make it personal. A greenhouse should be an expression of the person gardening in it. Decorate the greenhouse with vibrant hanging baskets and decorative pots. Develop a unique and inviting space which you will love to spend time in helping your garden grow. Making it a fun, engaging experience where a gardener can find sanctuary and a sense of accomplishment.
